On December 26, 2004, a tsunami devastated this area of Sri Lanka. Thousands died, and survivors lost everything they had. Gospel for Asia responded by meeting the immediate needs of the people and promising to stay on and help rebuild lives.
Five years later, GFA-supported workers are still there. One of them is Jayana, the project manager of a Bridge of Hope center that ministers to 130 children and their families. The center opened only a few months after the tsunami.
Jayana is thrilled to be part of seeing these children and their families change. Today there is joy and hope on the faces of children who once knew only fear and suffering.
The changes have even brought praise from village leader Oshani. "Through the Bridge of Hope, I see that from a small child to the biggest child, they now have good manners, they're disciplined, and they're good with their parents," she says. "I'm very thankful for what Bridge of Hope is doing in my community."
The Bridge of Hope staff spends hours praying for the children and parents. They have a great burden to make a difference in the lives of entire families.
This family has seen those prayers answered. "Before, I didn't have a job, and I turned to drinking. I was fighting with my wife. I was worried about the future and how to provide for my family. The Bridge of Hope staff encouraged me. Now I have a job and have quit drinking and fighting with my wife," this young father said.
This Bridge of Hope ministry is definitely making an eternal difference in the lives of these children . . .
their parents . . .
and the entire community.
