Massive monsoon floods in Sri Lanka last summer washed away all traces of everyday life for thousands of families. These children in a Gospel for Asia Bridge of Hope center lost all of their clothes, books and school supplies when the waters washed through their village.
Gospel for Asia's Compassion Services teams quickly rose up to meet the need. Just a few weeks after the floodwaters receded last July, students received backpacks stuffed with all they needed for school.
Each backpack contained fabric to sew into school uniforms, notebooks, crayons, pens and pencils. The Compassion Services teams handed out 300 bags in four locations.
Local officials worked with GFA staff to create lists of children with the greatest needs after the floods. This is how they determined how many backpacks to distribute.
When the big day arrived, parents and children were called forward, one by one, to receive their bags.
Both children and parents were thrilled by the generosity of the ministry that met their immediate needs.
This man is the highest government official in the district of Sri Lanka where these children live. He is expressing his deepest appreciation to the GFA teams who helped the children.
It was a joyful occasion for the GFA Compassion Services teams to show the love of Christ in this very practical way.
