04/05/2004: Crouching over His Radio

Crouching over His Radio

Safvan huddled over his radio early one morning, craning his ear to hear each word coming through the airwaves. He shuddered as he thought about the day his Muslim family members took the batteries out of his radio. Yet even their threats could not thwart his hunger for the message of hope.

Somehow Safvan had managed to get what he needed to continue listening to the broadcast, and he could hardly wait to tune in each day. For him, GFA Radio is a ray of hope that shines into the daily struggles he faces in his Indian community.

Safvan wanted to write the kind man who gave him such encouragement. Yet for a long time, he had no money for the postage stamp. One day he had the opportunity to send a note with these words:

I do not know much about you, but I listen to your radio messages regularly. I hope you will ask God to show me the path to victory and peace.

Each year Gospel for Asia receives 600,000 letters from radio listeners. Each person is replied to promptly and provided with follow-up materials, and Safvan was no exception.

He recently sent a second letter, expressing how happy he was to receive the personal note and booklets. "I will keep listening to the radio program," he wrote. "And I will keep in touch with you."

As we pray for the seeds of the Gospel to penetrate Safvan's heart and bear fruit, let us also remember the millions of other radio listeners, many of whom are hearing about Jesus for the first time. To help us broadcast this message of hope to more precious people in Asia, please click here.
