09/15/2006: Flooding Affects GFA Ministry Work

Flooding Affects GFA Ministry Work

As the flood waters continue to inflict massive damage in many parts of India, the work of Gospel for Asia and its churches has not been spared. Even some pastors involved in the relief efforts have been severely affected.

One church building and the home of the pastor were both completely destroyed. Other pastors were cut off by the waters and forced to stay in their houses for long periods of time. Many believers have also lost their homes and their belongings. And one GFA Bridge of Hope center collapsed, its walls undermined by the raging floods.

Yet amid the destruction, GFA-affiliated Believers Church pastors and volunteers continue to do all they can to help others in need. Even as some areas begin to recover, homes, churches, and Bridge of Hope centers are being rebuilt.

The leaders of our churches in Mumbai (Bombay) are assisting the poor in the slum villages by distributing large amounts of food and materials to those in need. In one of the slum villages, 50 people received rice, wheat and pulses such as split peas. In another slum village, 100 people were given oil, wheat, rice, and soap. Those who have received the materials are very thankful to GFA, its volunteers and supporters for this critical help.

In Chhattisgarh state, church and state are working together to bring relief to the people. While the state government provided basic food items to flood victims, the Believers Church decided to distribute other relief materials. GFA provided more than 500 people with men's and women's clothing, glasses, plates, and bed sheets.

GFA leaders in India are calling for prayer for the church leaders and members as well as for the other flood victims.
