GFA Tsunami Relief Work Brings Family to Christ

Tapi sat cross-legged on the dirt floor as she began weaving the mat. Knowing that this was their main source of income, her husband assisted by retrieving coconuts leaves from the nearby trees.

Earning only 40 rupees from weaving the leaves into a mat for a temporary roof, Shyam, his wife, son and daughter-in-law struggle to get by each day.

Shyam and his family lost all their earthly possessions—and their fishing business—when the tsunami hit in 2004, and are still recovering from the damage. Before the tsunami hit southern India, they hated Christianity. But when a Believers Church pastor visited them immediately after the waves hit, they experienced God's love in a tangible way and Jesus came alive to them.

"I realized that Jesus is really living in this world because His people—Christians—are coming and helping us," stated the 70-year-old man.

Now he and his family earn a living by weaving coconuts leaves. Gospel for Asia has given them shelter, food and clothing. Because of the overflow of the love of Christ through the GFA tsunami outreach, Shyam and his family came to the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ.

Gospel for Asia has made the commitment to those in the tsunami-hit areas to construct 1,000 homes and provide 500 fishing boats. We are committed to seeing this done in Asia in order that thousands more like Shyam and his family will come to know the Lord.
