Text from this PhotoShow:
After surviving the tsunami and the destruction of her home, Mariyam experienced Christ's love and compassion through the ministry of Gospel for Asia relief workers—and gave her life to Jesus as a result.
At age 26, Mariyam is a widow with three children. Her husband, driven to despair when he could find no way to provide for his family, committed suicide a few months after the tsunami.
Today, Mariyam and her family live in this temporary mud hut on the side of the road. Due to a road expansion, she could lose her home at any moment.
Mariyam runs a small shop out of her hut, where she sells a few candies and soft drinks. She earns just a few rupees a day from her profits.
A group of fellow Christians has provided her with a hand-cranked bicycle to help her travel to church and do other errands.
Mariyam's everyday tasks include washing her family's clothes outside by hand.
She lays her clothes to dry on the hedge along the road. The thorns keep the clothes from getting blown off when trucks and buses speed by.
Mariyam's 11-year-old son, Kavi, misses his father and his life before the tsunami, but he is very thankful for the Bridge of Hope center he attends each day after school.
Both Bridge of Hope and the relief provided by Gospel for Asia have made a difference in Kavi's life. His grades have improved and he appreciates the love and care given to him. Kavi has also given his life to Jesus.
Kavi's brother Kala, age 7, also attends the Bridge of Hope center and is learning simple English words along with the rest of his class.
