Villagers in Sri Lanka depend on wells like this for their supply of water. But hundreds of wells in this area were contaminated during this year's monsoon floods.
Wanting to help provide for the people's desperate need for water, Mahesh and Bayya, two Gospel for Asia missionaries, spent weeks cleaning out wells.
Most of the equipment was donated to GFA by the Texas Baptist Men after they finished cleaning wells in tsunami-affected areas in 2005.
It takes from 30 minutes to a couple of hours to clean a well.
"People can go for days without food, but they can't last long without water," said Mahesh, enthusiastic about the chance to help.
Debris ranging from plants and rocks to mud and trash washed into the wells during the floods, which reached depths of 12 feet in many places.
The villagers are thrilled to have clean water again. Many have had to walk long distances to carry drinking water back to their homes while their wells were unusable.
This man, a village leader, expresses his appreciation to Mahesh and Bayya for cleaning wells in his village.
The highest government official in the area was amazed at how hard the missionaries worked to get wells cleaned. He is very thankful for the help they are giving his people.
After the water runs clear, it's off to the next well. Mahesh and Bayya try to clean as many wells as they can in a day.
The well-cleaning is done in addition to their normal ministry responsibilities. Their hope is that more people will come to know Jesus' love through their providing water.
