Madhya Pradesh, India
Gospel for Asia missionary N. Chauhan has escaped from his abductors after spending a day in captivity and torture. GFA President K.P. Yohannan thanks Christians everywhere for their prayers for Chauhan’s safe release.

After Chauhan escaped, he managed to reach a Christian’s home, where he was able to contact his field leader. Only then did details about his November 24 abduction emerge.

Chauhan was in a marketplace in Madhya Pradesh, India, when a group of anti-Christian extremists began questioning him. Chauhan could feel their animosity and refused to answer their questions about his ministry. The angry group dragged him to a secluded house and beat him. They took Chauhan’s mobile phone, so he had no way to call for help.

Hours later, the mob brought in a Bible and tried to force Chauhan to stomp on it. The missionary refused, and was rewarded with more severe beatings.

The extremist group told Chauhan their leader was coming the next day, and “he will decide what to do with you.”

Meanwhile, Chauhan’s leaders realized he was missing and tried to call him. Their phone call was met with a voice saying, “The same thing is going to happen to you!” At that point, they contacted police to ask for help.

That night, the extremists took Chauhan to a dark place near a road to meet the group’s leader. While they waited, they untied Chauhan to let him relieve himself. Seeing his chance, the injured missionary ran—nine miles to a believer’s home. His captors lost his trail in the forest and were unable to find him.

Chauhan rested at the believer’s home and called his leader, who helped him make a plan to reach safety. His supervisors plan to transfer him to another area of ministry while this threat remains.

Extremists are becoming more and more brazen in their attacks,” said GFA President K.P. Yohannan, “but we thank the Lord for His miraculous intervention for this missionary.

Please join us in praising God for Pastor Chauhan’s escape, and pray that the Lord will protect him as he continues his ministry.”
