Students in dozens of Bridge of Hope Centers throughout India recently led Community Day programs that coincided with the celebration of World Environment Day. Students, including the ones shown here, learned how to care for God's creation while planting hundreds of trees throughout India.
Most centers started off their Community Day with a rally. These students are lined up for a march, in which they carried educational signs about how trees and plants are beneficial to the environment.
The rallies also featured a variety of speakers, including teachers and scientific authorities. A speaker in Manipur, India explained that a large proportion of the world's land surface is covered in forest and how the trees in those forests help keep the ecosystem balanced.
These students performed skits about the importance of caring for the envioronment so that it can sustain life as God intended.
The highlight of the day came when the kids—and their teachers—got their hands dirty planting trees!
These students are showing off the many varieties of saplings that were planted, including badam, guava, mango, bamboo and banyan. In some places the saplings were donated to the centers by individuals, businesses and organizations that were thrilled to see the children taking such a proactive role in repopulating the earth with plants.
Although it was fun to dig holes and plant trees, the children also learned a bigger lesson. They now know that trees actually make the air cleaner.
The Community Day tree-planting events were a great success! Students had a good time and their teachers are praying that these youngsters grow into conscientious adults who will continue caring for God's creation.
