Hope walked through the slums of Uttar Pradesh, India, this February in the form of a Gospel for Asia women’s team—and several bags of clothing.
Although the typical Asian does not own large amounts of clothing, Gospel for Asia staff members in Uttar Pradesh collected used clothing from their own closets and sorted them for distribution among men, women and children in a slum area of a village they have adopted for ministry. On February 3, a Women’s Fellowship team began handing the clothes out to the poorest people of the community.
Starting in the morning, the women looked for the most needy families and distributed the clothes until the afternoon. At the same time that they showed their care for the physical needs of the people, the women were also able to share the Gospel with the slum dwellers, who were very grateful for the act of compassion.
“About one hour after the distribution,” our correspondent wrote, “the women noticed that some of the children were already wearing the clothes they gave them. The team members’ hearts soared with joy when they saw those little ones.”
Two weeks later, the Women’s Fellowship team encouraged a group of women GFA Bible college students to do the same thing as part of their outreach in slum areas. The students enthusiastically took on the idea and are carrying it out.
Please pray that in these slums, the love of Jesus will draw many to salvation, and that our women’s teams will continue finding creative ways to share the compassion of Christ.
