Flooded roads cut many survivors off from relief supplies. |
Disasters splattered across the state of Assam, India, this week leaving dozens dead and thousands cut off from aid or relief.
On October 30, more than 70 people died when 13 coordinated bomb explosions rocked the western side of Assam. In the capital, Guwahati, the largest blast mangled bodies and cars near government offices. Bomb explosions targeting crowded markets injured at least 300 people. One of Assam’s many militant rebel groups was blamed.
Police spent the day covering burnt bodies with sheets, trying to get the wounded to hospitals and guessing where another bomb may be planted.
… more than 70 people died when 13 coordinated bomb explosions rocked the western side of Assam.“There may be more blasts. You never know,” Foxnews.com quoted Guwahati’s deputy inspector, N.L. Hussain.
For Gospel for Asia native missionaries, church leaders and believers alike, the explosions in the capital city make travel on the state’s main highway difficult. In an attempt to prevent the violence from spreading, government officials often impose curfews and roadblocks—an additional hardship for victims of a recent flood.
Disasters on Every Side
Just a day before the bombings, a river embankment in northeastern Assam gave way, flooding 70 villages and severing the main highway on that side of the state.
As after other disasters, GFA Compassion Services teams will do all they can to help the survivors. |
Monsoon flooding occurs almost every year, but generally the rainy season ends in September. This year, however, the rains have continued into late October.
Power company dams have also been blamed for the torrent of water that displaced 70,000 people. It is unknown how many may have died, or how soon government relief will make it past the flooded roads.
GFA workers in Assam plan to bring water, food and other relief items as soon as possible to both the bombing and flood survivors. In the meantime, thousands wait.
GFA correspondents ask for prayer that our missionaries will be able to travel to the affected areas and bring relief and the hope of God’s love.
