A Farm Boy's Ambition

October 26, 2009

Kumar's desire to read his Bible led to many people hearing of Christ.

When Kumar was a young man, people in his village used to mock him for carrying his Bible—a book they said he didn't even know how to read.

This was true for much of Kumar's life. His poor farming family could only afford to send him to school through fourth grade.

But ever since he was a child, Kumar had a great desire to read for himself from his family's treasure: their Bible. Many Christian families in his country don't have a chance to own their own copy. So with his limited reading ability, Kumar would sit with the Bible and laboriously go over each word he knew. He decided that whatever it took, he would learn to read.

Gradually, through much hard work, Kumar taught himself to read it thoroughly. So as he walked down his village path with the Bible under his arm, he indeed knew its message well.

Over the next few years, Kumar's growing knowledge of God's Word led him to a deep relationship with Christ. He started searching for ways to serve the Lord and share with others the hope he had found through the Scriptures. Then, he met a Gospel for Asia-supported missionary who led him to a Bible college.

Today, Kumar has graduated and started a ministry in another village, where, he daily shares the message of God's love. His yearning as a child to read God's Word has led to many other people hearing it as well.
