Intoxicated Youths Turn Violent

May 14, 2009

Sujit and Goutam took shelter in their church building like this one when a mob threatened them.

Recently, two Gospel for Asia-supported missionaries were awakened in the middle of the night by the sound of stones hitting the church where they were staying. The two men, Sujit and Goutam, went outside to find a gang of 25 drunk young adults, and they asked the gang what they wanted.

Instead of calming down when they saw Sujit and Goutam, the youths started threatening the two missionaries.

"Leave this place or we'll kill you!" they shouted. The gang started pushing Sujit and Goutam, intending to beat them, but the two men made it back inside the church safely. The young people left after destroying the lights outside the church and damaging part of the roof.

Sujit and Goutam contacted the church's GFA-supported pastor, who came to the church with a few other Christians. The next day, the pastor spoke with neighbors, who suspected that the gang had come from another town. The neighbors assured the pastor that they would watch out and try to help him protect the church property.

"Many anti-Christians are abusing and threatening our missionaries and pastors," wrote GFA's correspondent. "Pray that God will protect our workers and the other Christians in this place."
