Until a few months ago, gambling and alcoholism were a way of life for Nirmal. He was also a nuisance to others in his North Indian village, who were all too familiar with his tendency to start quarrels.
It seemed unlikely, if not impossible, that Nirmal would ever change. He was caught in a vicious cycle of addiction. It was through God’s miraculous work that Nirmal experienced a breakthrough.
GFA native missionary Ruel was doing evangelistic outreach in the village. Meeting Nirmal, he told him of Jesus, who could break the chains of his addictions and bring relief to his troubled heart. He left some Gospel tracts and a New Testament with Nirmal.
As Ruel faithfully met with Nirmal and ministered to him from God’s Word, the Holy Spirit touched his heart. Nirmal began to see himself as a sinner in desperate need of a Savior. Turning from his former way of living, he received Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord.
Because of the Lord’s merciful intervention through the compassion of a native missionary, people no longer need to dread the sight of Nirmal coming down the street. Nirmal’s story is not unusual.
