Millions living in Asia's slums aren't aware of the various health hazards they face in their cobbled-together neighborhoods. Lack of a proper water drainage system and stagnant water in wells breed mosquitoes and other water-borne diseases.
There's also a scarcity of water. The residents of this slum came together to install a well in their area, but they didn't have money to dig the well deep enough. The quality of water was inconsistent and often unsafe. Many who drank from it became sick or had stomach problems.
Some people had to travel long distances to fetch water for their family. They would store as much water as they could for the entire day.
Others had to walk about a mile to get water and would have to wait even longer before they could pump water from the well because of the crowd that would gather. Sometimes fights would break out over the water.
But now that a Jesus Well has been dug closer to their area, they don't have to walk long distances carrying heavy jugs of water. And there's no more fighting.
The slum residents say the water from the Jesus Well tastes better than the water from their old well. And it doesn't smell bad either.
The Jesus Well is not just a place to get a clean drink of water.
The people also use the well to do their laundry…
…for bathing…
…to get water for cooking…
…and for cleaning.
Slum residents no longer have to worry about deteriorating health or water-borne diseases, thanks to the Jesus Well.
