In the lap of the Himalayas, Sikkim, India, possesses a rugged, picturesque charm. However, Sikkim's winter climate can be brutal and unforgiving.
In the coldest areas, nighttime temperatures can plummet below freezing point. People without adequate winter clothing congregate around fires to warm themselves.
The kitchen becomes a gathering place for people to chat in the warmth of the oven-fire.
Even though they live in an area abundant with reminders of God's majestic creation, very few of the people there know Him personally.
Gospel for Asia-supported missionary Sahas Sherpa wants the people in this state to know the Lord. He is committed to sharing the Good News in an especially frigid area of Sikkim. He has to bundle up even inside his home!
Sahas received a winter-clothing package from Gospel for Asia. Now the weather isn't such a hindrance to his work.
During the day, Sahas puts on his coat and heads out to distribute Gospel tracts, tell people about Jesus and pray for the sick.
He also leads other missionaries and often goes with them as they share the Gospel, visiting from house to house.
In the evening, his warm clothing is even more of a necessity, as he travels to believers' houses for weekly prayer meetings.
Sahas also treks up mountainsides to villages in very high altitudes, where travelers must have adequate winter clothing and footgear. Because the forbidding climate can deter missionaries from reaching these areas, many people have not heard about Jesus.
Villages like this one, which towers at 13,000 feet, have smaller populations. But Sahas wants to make sure the people there don't miss hearing the Good News because of their geographic location.
Pastor Sahas is thankful that he can travel to hard-to-reach areas, by the grace of God. He acknowledges, "Without warm clothes and footgear, I would not have been able to reach out to those living in high altitudes of Sikkim and share about the Lord."
