Ministry In Diversity

Goa's tropical climate and beautiful beaches attract tourists from all over the world.

Goa is a small state, but it is diverse—full of many customs unique from the rest of India. These cultural differences find their origin in the state's 450-year Portuguese rule. With colonial rule, came Catholicism. Approximately one-third of the population of Goa profess this faith, and dozens of Catholic churches dot the landscape. They are an additional attraction to the tropical beaches that make Goa a favorite spot for tourists.

As a whole, Goan culture is more open and tends to be more independent and career-oriented than the rural areas of India. The people are driven by their jobs and the hope of prosperity. Alcoholism is a widespread problem, and sexual trafficking is leaving a dark stain on this tropical paradise.

Gospel for Asia's ministry in Goa started in the summer of 1999. It includes radio broadcasts in the Konkani language and several other languages spoken in Goa, as well as literature distribution and film teams. The 40-plus GFA missionaries in Goa have started approximately 20 churches and 200 small-group fellowships. There are 50 Bible college students enrolled in the GFA Bible college in Goa. GFA's Bridge of Hope program is also an effective tool for ministry. The Bridge of Hope centers scattered across the state have proven to be a great way to share the love of Jesus with the children of Goa.

"Prayer and personal evangelism are the keys for the success of the ministry in Goa," Jawahar comments. Jawahar, who oversees GFA's ministry in Goa, is excited about the soon-to-be-launched television channel.

Jawahar, who oversees GFA's ministry in Goa, is excited about the soon-to-be-launched television channel. "The local people are crazy about TV," he says. He believes the Christian programming will lead many to salvation in Jesus Christ.

GFA missionaries are still using the tried and true methods to share the Gospel in Goa.

"Prayer and personal evangelism are the keys for the success of the ministry in Goa," Jawahar comments. He goes on to explain how important it is that the missionaries remain humble and take every opportunity to serve the people. He encourages them to form small groups where those who are interested in Jesus can learn more about the Gospel. Personal evangelism and follow-up are important too, as it takes time to gain the respect and trust of the people.
