Jesus Wells

Now the villagers can get as much water as they need at the Jesus Well near Darpan's church.

Most of us take for granted the water which flows freely from our taps. But for many villages in South Asia, this basic life necessity is often in short supply. Village wells may dry up—especially during drought season—and it is not unusual for families to walk several miles just to find water for their household needs.

If you are a Dalit, one of Asia's "Untouchables," you will likely be barred from drawing water from the village well at all because of your inferior social status. And Christians suffer too, as persecution commonly comes in the form of banning them from the local water source.

But God is providing Jesus Wells for such communities. Bearing a plaque with the inscription of Jesus' words in John 4:13-14 about offering eternally satisfying water, each well is a tangible expression of Jesus' love. The well not only provides families with life-nourishing physical refreshment, but also points them to the true source of Living Water.

Imagine the joy of Christians in Asia—as well as "Untouchable" Dalits—when a Jesus Well is dug in their village! Not only are the believers encouraged in their faith, but by God's gracious provision, hundreds of communities have been transformed—for now and eternity—through the Jesus Wells outreach.

Text from this PhotoShow:

In the southern area of Uttar Pradesh, India, many people live in poverty and need.
With temperatures peaking at more than 100 degrees F. in the summer, it is hard for them to obtain even the most vital provisions like water.
Gospel for Asia native missionary Darpan Balbir has been working in this difficult area for the past 11 years. Along with the trying environment, Darpan has also faced opposition to his ministry.
Water is scarce in this rocky terrain, even in the wettest years. GFA brought hope in the midst of this poor and desolate village by drilling a Jesus Well.
The wells that were already in the village typically dry up in the summer months because they were not drilled deep enough.
The lack of local wells left the villagers without any water, forcing them to walk up to three miles to get it.
Now the villagers can get as much water as they need at the Jesus Well near Darpan's church.
Because the villagers have seen the love of Christ through the well, they are not opposed to Darpan. Many have even chosen to follow Christ, and Darpan's church is growing exponentially.
"Many of the villagers believe that it is God who brought this Jesus Well for them," Darpan said.
Through this physical gift of water, Darpan can share the gift of Living Water with the villagers as well. He requests prayer that many more will receive the love of Christ through his witness at the Jesus Well.
