People are now left to rebuild their homes—and their lives.

On Oct. 19, believers and GFA pastors packed up a truck with food packets for 400 families living in three areas hit hardest by Cyclone Hudhud. Each food packet contained 22 pounds of rice, 2 pounds of dal, 2 pounds of sugar, 1 quart of oil and various cooking spices.

GFA Compassion Services teams are working to bring more aid to those affected by Cyclone Hudhud.

The cyclone left hundreds of people homeless, seeking shelter in relief camps or under plastic tarps issued by local authorities. About 95 houses belonging to believers have been damaged. Forty families of children attending one GFA World Bridge of Hope center in Andhra Pradesh and at least 28 pastors have been affected.

According to news reports, the death toll in Andhra Pradesh has risen to 41.

The tail end of Cyclone Hudhud also triggered a blizzard and avalanches in the Himalayan Mountains of Nepal. More than 30 people died, including foreigners.

Please pray for:

  • God to comfort and show His love to those who are struggling after the devastation of Cyclone Hudhud.
  • Strength and wisdom for GFA Compassion Services teams as they provide food, water and other necessities to those in need.
  • Bridge of Hope students and their families who were affected.
  • Churches and homes to be rebuilt speedily.

Churches Destroyed, Believers Homeless After Cyclone Hudhud Devastates Land

October 14, 2014

On October 11, the Indian states of Andhra Pradesh and Odisha experienced heavy rainfall and a storm that turned into what is now known as Cyclone Hudhud.

Strong winds, traveling at speeds reaching 127 miles per hour, destroyed several churches led by GFA World pastors and demolished nearly 100,000 homes, dozens of which belonged to believers. All phone communication has been cut off, and people now face a scarcity of food and clean water.

The Indian government had evacuated more than 400,000 people from the coastal regions where Cyclone Hudhud was expected to hit, significantly reducing the loss of life. So far, news reports indicate at least 24 people have died because of the cyclone.

The local government is at work clearing roads of uprooted trees, electrical poles and other debris. They are also airdropping food rations to people living in areas that are currently difficult to reach.

GFA World Compassion Service workers are mobilizing, providing food, drinking water and shelter to those now wondering how they will survive after the cyclone’s wreckage. GFA teams are preparing for long-term relief, which includes home reconstruction and gifts that will help them generate much-needed income.

“Our workers on the ground are doing everything they can to provide for the basic needs of those affected by this disaster and to communicate and demonstrate the love of Christ to as many people as possible,” said Dr. K.P. Yohannan, Director of GFA."

Please pray for:

  • God’s protection over those helping bring relief in areas devastated by Cyclone Hudhud.
  • Encouragement for those now living unsure of what the future holds.
  • Pastors and missionaries who will be ministering to those who lost loved ones and homes.
