Cyclone Sidr struck Bangladesh on November 15. The cyclone (which is the Asian name for a hurricane) devastated this impoverished country and killed thousands. Residents are still discovering corpses of people and animals in rivers, canals and trampled rice paddies.
The need is overwhelming and the people are desperate for help. The hearts of GFA World's missionaries are filled with compassion for these suffering people. They have been working with the victims ever since the storm passed.
Sidr left millions homeless. These small homes were unable to withstand the force of the Category 4 storm. This home was blown apart by the cyclone.
People are now creating shelter out of whatever they can find. Many are using thin bed sheets to cover their makeshift dwellings. Others are sleeping outside, where it is very cold at night.

This woman was injured during the storm and her wounds are still healing. Millions are now beginning to suffer from waterborne diseases and from wounds left untreated after the storm.
GFA World's Compassion Services teams have been working in the area since the storm hit. This team filled these bags with food and other emergency supplies.
Once the bags were filled, they headed out to the villages. This group travelled by boat, because most of the roads in the area were impassable.
During this trip, the missionaries were able to distribute emergency supplies to more than 1,000 families.
One of the people they helped was this 90-year-old woman.
These villagers now have enough food to get them by for a few days, but there is much more work to be done.
GFA World is committed to helping the people of this Muslim country. The work will originate from the churches that GFA missionaries have already planted in Bangladesh.
