In Christ, No Barriers

Sitting on the floor of her simple, modest home in Goa, India, Vincy lifts her hands toward heaven, her face aglow as she worships the Savior. Looking at her now, no one would ever guess Vincy was once a prostitute.

Because of the number of men in Goa who do not take responsibility for their families, many women take on this shame-filled profession for their survival. And for most, it may feel like there is no way out.

But Vincy heard about and embraced the Savior ...

But Vincy heard about and embraced the Savior—and deliverance—through the witness of a GFA World women's ministry team. Even though her day-to-day life isn't always easy, Vincy has put her trust in the Lord and regularly experiences His provision. And today, a GFA-affiliated fellowship group meets regularly in her home.

The team starts off each day with prayer and time in God's Word before heading out for ministry activities.

Indrani, the GFA women's team leader who pointed Vincy to the Savior, is perhaps about as different from the former prostitute as one could imagine. Growing up in a high-caste family in Karnataka, India, Indrani was privileged to receive a well-rounded Indian education that included a variety of academic subjects along with instruction in karate and classical Indian singing and dance.

With this privilege also came an association issue: Being of high caste, Indrani and her family were not to mingle with people of low caste. If, by chance, they did come in close contact with a low-caste person, they were required to perform an elaborate cleansing ceremony. They certainly would not want to be seen associating with prostitutes. Virtually no one in Goan society wanted any contact with these women—except for those who kept them in business.

Looking at her now, no one would ever guess Vincy was once a prostitute.

With her high-caste status, Indrani served her religion with much zeal, promoting and speaking out for its precepts. She taught yoga classes and instructed other women from the Hindu sacred texts.

But then Indrani's sister became a Christian. And when Indrani began to grasp the Gospel, her perspective changed, too. She chose to receive Christ, and the devotion with which she had served her former religion was now redirected to serving her Savior. Despite opposition from her unsaved parents, she attended a GFA Bible college and sensed God calling her to serve in Goa—a place where organized prostitution rings abound. She and her team began by reaching out to those in hospitals, and later began working directly with the prostitutes.

Indrani and her team live in a two-room rented flat and do the cooking and cleaning together.

“Seeing their condition, how these ladies are living in prostitution and their families are broken, we feel compassion for them,” Indrani shares. “We want to lead them to Christ.”

People like Vincy—and at least 14 people living near her who have also come to faith and commitment in Christ—are glad they are. What started in Vincy's home as a prayer meeting is now a church. When two other GFA missionaries came along to lead the church, Vincy and her team continued their ministry among women in various areas of Goa, not only proclaiming the Gospel but also teaching believers how to know Jesus more, be a blessing to their husbands, and take ownership of the ministry God has given to them.

Indrani's marriage has been arranged to a godly man who is also serving with GFA, so she will join in his ministry, which is also among hurting people in Goa. And among broken women like the prostitutes, Indrani has made a lasting impact as one who entered their world and walked their soil, pointing them to the worth and forgiveness they can find in Jesus.
