On the outside, David and Sindi seemed to have it all: a loving marriage, a new home in a thriving industrial suburb and David’s new good job as a mechanic. But behind closed doors, fears loomed in the back of their minds.
These fears stemmed from a devastating diagnosis they had received just a few months after David secured his mechanic’s job: They were both HIV-positive. Since the 1980s, this deadly virus has killed more than 43 million people worldwide, with half a million deaths occurring in 2025 alone. In addition to its physical implications, the diagnosis brings shame and can lead to discrimination.
Knowing the coming struggles, this diagnosis broke David and Sindi’s hearts, as well as that of their families. To make matters worse for the couple, their doctors advised them against having children, possibly due to the risk of mother-to-child transmission.
Children are extremely important in David and Sindi’s society. Children continue their family lineage and often care for their elderly parents. As a result, couples who can’t have kids can experience stigma and social isolation. This meant that David and Sindi would not only face the challenges of a chronic, life-altering illness and be denied the joy of parenthood, but they could also be cut off from social interaction with their neighbors.
Stories of Hope
As David and Sindi struggled to navigate through life, the burden of their diagnoses hung over them like a dark cloud. Then, one day, a co-worker suggested they explore the local churches for help. Searching for solace, the couple arrived at a church led by GFA pastor Kiba, who welcomed them with open arms.
After David and Sindi shared their fears with Pastor Kiba, he offered them a message of hope. He shared with them the miracles Jesus had performed, along with other stories recorded in the Bible. These stories ignited hope within David and Sindi’s anxious hearts, and they began to yearn for their own miracle.
Tenacious Faith
Before David and Sindi’s prayers were even answered, they decided to embrace Christ’s love. Although they had yet to receive their miracle, their faith had become the “substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen” (Hebrews 11:1). Filled with this conviction, they believed that their God would intervene in their lives.
Then a miracle occurred—David and Sindi’s new blood tests came back negative for HIV! Through God’s power and this couple’s unwavering faith, the impossible had become reality. Having experienced the Lord’s goodness, their faith soared, and they began joyfully praying for a child.
The couple’s faith was soon put to the test when Sindi suffered a miscarriage that left them grief-stricken. Despite their pain, they clung to Jesus and continued to pray. Before long, the Lord answered their prayers, and Sindi conceived again. This time, they welcomed a healthy baby boy into their family.
Their son’s birth became a powerful testament of what can happen when faith is placed in the hands of an almighty and loving God. David’s non-Christian parents, who witnessed this extraordinary turn of events, couldn’t help but praise God and began to attend church.
In deep gratitude, David and Sindi dedicated their infant son to God in the same church where their lives were transformed. From now on, through life’s joys and challenges, their son will help remind them of this eternal truth: The Lord is faithful to answer His people.
