CARROLLTON, Texas — Leprosy is a largely forgotten disease in the West, but it’s still greatly feared across Asia, where each year it infects and maims hundreds of thousands. Even for those fortunate enough to find treatment, the social stigma associated with this ancient disease makes life nearly impossible for its victims. Through its leprosy ministry, Gospel for Asia (GFA) reaches out to these victims with the transforming love of Jesus and brings awareness to this highly-curable disease on World Leprosy Day, Jan. 26. “While this ancient disease may be largely forgotten in many parts of the world, it’s an everyday reality for many in Asia,” said Dr. K. P. Yohannan, Gospel for Asia founder and international director. “Through our leprosy ministry, we are reaching out to these forgotten victims and giving them hope, the hope found in Jesus and his ‘good news.’”.

After being served a cooked meal, an 80-year-old man living in the village thanked the visitors for the food and told them, “I feel so good that someone who does not know me cared for me and visited me.”. Another villager said that no one had ever shown such care before, and she had been prompted to follow their example. “When they went and prayed for the sick people of our village, I felt that I too should visit the sick people in the coming days,” she said. “It is a great lesson that I have learned, to love and care for each other.”.

GFA workers and Bridge of Hope staff have encouraged students to stand strong in adversity and reminded students of their love for them. “Though the centers are closed due to COVID-19, we are praying for you and love you,” said GFA worker Taggart. “Today, what you are going to receive is the expression of our love to you all.”. He also encouraged them to love one another and become useful people for society. Macia is a student who received food at one of the distributions. Bridge of Hope student happily displays the ration kit she received. “I am deeply grateful to [Bridge of Hope] staff and leaders for their love and care for my life,” Macia said. “I have learned many good things from the center, and now you are giving me the dry ration kits. I will never forget such an act of kindness in my life.”.

Peony, 65, was grateful the team traveled the distance to bring aid. “I am really happy and thankful for this kind help,” Peony said, “because it is hard for me to go to the long distance (around 12 kilometers for market) in my old age and purchase things.”. Keifer, another recipient, was also in need. He has no family support. “This timely help will be unforgettable for me, which is the demonstration of God’s true love,” Keifer said.
