The Central Tamil Nadu Region
The Central Tamil Nadu Region has many areas where the people depend on agriculture, and its Thanjavur district is known as the “Rice Bowl of Tamil Nadu.” Tea estates on rolling hills dot this region.
People are also employed in trade and industry; Coimbatore city is among the most industrialized cities in the state and is known as South India’s textile capital.
The region is also home to many Dalits (“Untouchables”) and low castes, which impacts the poverty rate.
The Meenakshi temple in Madurai is a famous pilgrimage site that draws both tourists and worshipers.
